Outline

Development since foundation

After the Eugenic Protection Law passed the second Diet of 1948, Associations for Maternal Welfare were formed in each prefecture one after another. In the following April of 1949, Japan Association for Maternal Welfare (JAMW) was established with doctors licensed under the Eugenic Protection Law from all over Japan, in order to protect the maternal welfare and the eugenic well-being of the Japanese people. Dr. Yasaburo Taniguchi, member of the House of Councillors at that time, assumed the post of president.

Since then, JAMW has continued to strive to promote eugenic protection activities, and was authorized as a corporate body in August 1952.
When Dr. Taniguchi met with an untimely death in 1963, Dr. Yutaka Moriyama, who was professor at Tokyo University then, became the president. Dr. Moriyama passed away in November 1988. The third president(01Apr1989-28Dec2006) was Dr. Shouichi Sakamoto. Dr. Toshihiko Terao has served as the 4th president(01Apr2007-) up to the present.

In May 1994, the organization's name was changed from Japan Association for Maternal Welfare to Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (JAOG).
On September 26, 1996, the Eugenic Protection Law was amended as the Motherhood Protection Law.
In 1998, the articles of the association were partially revised with the purport of changing the associationユs aim and the details of its activities. This revision contributed to clarify the course of the activities.

Nationwide organization and members

Branches were established in all prefectures, and each branch was further divided into regional branches according to administrative division. As mentioned above, the members were originally doctors licensed under the Eugenic Protection Law from throughout the country. However, the board of representatives revised the articles of the association in 1965 so as to make it an organization for all medical specialists of obstetrics and gynecology, embracing doctors licensed under the Eugenic Protection Law (changed to doctors licensed under the Motherhood Protection Law from 1996).

Today, not only people related to health care but also people in many different fields, such as administration, science and the news media, attach great importance to JAOG. They regard it, along with Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as メassociations of medical specialistsモ that promote the enhancement of national welfare through safeguarding maternal and infantile health, and women's health.

Current activities

At the present, the associationユs business matters are carried out under the presidency of Dr. Sakamoto with three vice-presidents, thirteen executive directors, twenty-three directors, and sixteen managers. Sixty-nine representatives elected from each prefecture branch make up the board of representatives, which is the resolution-making organ administered by a chairperson and a vice-chairperson. Three inspectors inspect the associationユs business matters.

JAOG actively pushes forward the various activities it is pursuing in close contact and cooperation with other related organizations, particularly maintaining close collaboration with Japan Medical Association, and Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The main purpose of JAOGユs activities is to contribute to the national welfare by protecting the life and health of both the mother and child, as well as maintaining and improving womenユs health. The direct and indirect reinforcement of JAOGユs organization, medical business management, and improving the welfare of the entire membership all contribute to this aim. For that purpose, JAOG is divided into nine departments and two divisions, such as the General Affairs Department, to conduct its current business matters.
